Individual Coaching

We get a lot of questions about personal coaching.  Who should work with a coach? What will it be like? Is coaching therapy? What will we work on?

Coaching works well for anyone with a growth mindset. Simply put, a growth mindset exists when you want to continue to grow and believe (at least a little bit) in your ability to do so. 

The actual sessions vary greatly. We do sessions one on one because our tools and strategies are tailored to each individual’s specific needs.  For example, many of our clients who self-identify as type A enjoy having detailed goals and between session homework.  Many of our clients who are experiencing overwhelm and burnout prefer an active listening approach.  Here, your coach’s goal is to help you get closer to your own wants and needs and support you in standing up for them. Frequently, even the same individuals need different types of support on different days. A good coach is able to provide a safe container space for exploration and growth, regardless of the client’s potentially changing needs for that particular day.

Although there may be some overlap between coach skills and therapist skills, coaching is not therapy.  For example, good professionals in both fields are excellent active listeners with high emotional intelligence. Both will sometimes support you in behavior or habit change. The theory of human behavior and psychology may come up during coaching sessions.  However, a coach is not a mental health professional.  Coaches are not trained to treat mental illness, nor do they have the certification requirements or restrictions that therapists do.

With personal coaching, we frequently help people with their careers, relationships, life transitions, and creative solutions to difficult decisions. Specifically, here are some of the topics that we have recently encountered:

  • Navigating a change in career to achieve a healthier work/life balance

  • Understanding how to work through burnout experienced in caregiving fields (such as healthcare)

  • The emotional and logistical challenges of deciding when to close a business

  • Understanding relationships with other people, your personal blind spots, and how to change the way you listen, support, and interact

  • Achieving new health goals such as a change in stress management, fitness, or eating habits
